Astringents in Herbs     

 

 

light wheat (fructus tritici levis; fu xiao mai)

replenishing qi, clearing away heat ,and arresting perspiration.

schisandra fruit (fructus schisandrae; wu wei zi)

astringing the lung, nourishing the kidney, promoting the production of body fluid, arresting sweating, seminal emission and diarrhea, and tranquilizing the mind.

black plum (fructus mume; wu mei)

astringing the lung to relieve cough, astringing the bowels to stop diarrhea, promoting the production of body fluid to quench thirst and regulating the stomach to alleviate colic caused by ascariasis.

lotus seed (semen nelumbinis; lian zi)

invigorating the spleen to relieve diarrhea, tonifying the kidney to arrest seminal emission, and nourishing the heart to tranquilize the mind.

 

 

dogwood fruit (fructus corni; shan zhu yu)

nourishing the liver and kidney and inducing astringency to arrest incessant and excessive loss of the body fluid.

bitter cardamon (fructus alpiniae oxyphyllae; yi zhi ren)

warming up the spleen, improving appetite and digestion, conserving saliva, warming up the kidney to keep the kidney essence and reduce urination.

cuttle-bone (os sepiella seu sepiae; wu zei gu)

inducing astringency to arrest hemorrhage, keeping the kidney essence, curing leukorrhagia, decreasing the production of gastric acid to relieve stomachache, and removing dampness to heal wounds.
