Knoxia Root (hong da ji)

Radix Knoxiae

Properties: Bitter and pungent in flavour, cold in nature, being poisonous, it acts on the lung, kidney and large intestine channels. Bitter and cold for increasing excretions of urine and stool, the herb can release the pathogens of water and dampness by defecation and urination. Its effect is similar to that of kansui root but milder. It is suitable for patients with edema, ascites, phlegm retention and dyspnea caused by syndrome of excess type. External application of the herb shows detoxication effect and can subdue swelling.

Effects: Removing water retention, subduing swelling and mass.

Indications:

1. For hydrothorax, ascites, costal pain and dyspnea, cough, fullness in chest and abdominal, difficulty in urination and defecation caused by syndrome of excess type, it is often used together with kansui root and genkwa flower to increase effect of purgation.

2. For furuncles and carbuncles due to noxious heat or scrofula and subcutaneous nodules due to accumulation of phlegm-fire, it is often used in combination with pleione rhzome (Rhizoma Pleionis) realgar and musk (Moschus) for detoxiction, resolving mass, relieving stasis and eliminating edema.

Dosage and Administration: 1.5-3g, it is usually used in bolus and powder (1g each time).

Precautions: The herb should not be prescribed to pregnant women and weak patients. It is antagonistic to liquorice.
