Tortoise Plastron (gui ban)   

Plastrum Testudinis

 

properties: The drug is sweet and salty in flavour, cold in nature and acts on the liver and kidney channels. Sweet in flavour, moist and cold in nature for clearing heat, and salty for acting on the kidney, the herb can tonify Yin of the liver and kidney, suppress hyperactivity of the liver-yang, clear heat of deficiency type and strengthen muscles and bones. It is indicated for Yin deficiency of the liver and kidney, hectic fever due to consumption, hyperactivity of the liver-yang, osteomalacia due to deficiency of the kidney, bleeding due to blood heat caused by Yin deficiency and other syndromes.

Effects: Tonifying Yin, suppressing Yang hyperactivity, nourishing the kidney, strengthening bones, arresting bleeding and normalizing menstruation.

Indications:

1. The herb is often used in combination with anemarrhena rhizome, phellodendron bark, prepared rehmannia root and other herbs for tonifying Yin and clearing fire from the lung, to treat deficiency of the kidney-yin, fever due to Yin deficiency, night sweat and hectic fever; with chrysanthemum flower, white peony root, achyranthes root, oyster shell and other herbs for calming the liver and suppressing hyperactivity ot the liver-yang, to treat dizziness and headache due to Yin deficiency and Yang hyperactivity; and with fresh water turtle shell, oyster shell, rehmannia root and other herbs for tonifying Yin, suppressing Yang hyperactivity and explling pathogenic wind, to treat stirring up of endopathic wind of deficiency type at the late stage of febrile disease.

2. To treat hypofunction of the liver and kidney, deficiency of essence and blood, lassitude of muscles and bones, and five kinds of retardation in children, the herb is often used in combination with tiger bone, achyranthes root, Chinese cynomorium and other herbs for tonifying the kidney and strengthening bones.

3. To treat blood-heat due to Ying deficiency with symptoms of profuse menstruation or unceasing metrorrhagia and matrostaxis, the herb is often used in combination with scutellaria root, phellodenrdron bark, white peony and other herbs.

Dosage and Administration: 10-30g Decocted first.
