Mirabilite (mang xiao)  

Natrii Sulphas

Properties: Salty and bitter in flavour, cold in nature, it acts on stomach and large intestine channels. Its action is similar to that of rhubarb but milder. Mirabilite is effective for interior syndrome of excess of heat in gastro-intestinal tract, dry stools and constipation, Yangming fu-organ disease manefested as fever with constipation, delirium and madness. External use of the drug can clear the fire and eliminate edema to treat burns.

Effects: Purging heat, loosening the bowels, softening hard masses and moistening, clearing away heat and eliminating edema.

Indications:

1. Accumulation of excessive heat in gastro-intestinal tract with dry stools and constipation, abdominal distention and pain, high fever with delirium. The drug is used in combination with rhubarb and magnolia bark (Cortex Magnoliae officinalis) as in Major Decoction for Purging Down Digestive Qi and Purgative Decoction for Enhancing Stomach Function.

2. Interior excess of heat and toxins, manifested as acute conjunctivitis with edema and pain, sore throat, canker sores in mouth and tongue, acute mastitis. the drug can be used alone for external application or used in combination with powders made of Borneol (Borneolum), borax and c innabar (Cinnabaris).

Dosage and Administration: 6-12g, infused in the decoction of other drugs for oral administration, proper dosage for external use.

Precautions: It is contraindicated for pregnant women.
