Scrophulariae
Properties:
Bitter, sweet and salty in
flavour, cold in nature, it acts on the lung and kidney
channels. Its bitter and cold properties purge the fire
downward. The sweet and cold properties possess the
moisturing quality and the characteristics of salty and
cold can enter the blood division. This herb is good at
clearing away heat to cool the blood, and dispelling the
noxious heat. So it is indicated for the syndromes of
excessive heat in the blood division, manifested as heat
invasion to ying and blood division, intense heat in both
Qi and blood systems and heat invasion to pericardium. It
is also capable of norishing Yin of lung and kidney,
purging downward the fire of deficiency type, detoxicating
and resolving lumps. It is often used to cure
hyperactivity of fire due to Yin deficiency, scrofula and
superficial suppurative infections.
Effects:
Clearing away heat to cool
the blood, detoxicating, dissolving lumps, nourishing Yin
and purging the fire.
Indications:
1.
For the febrile diseases manifested as the
syndromes of heat, invasion of ying and blood systems,
rash and eruption, heat, invasion of pericardium, it is
often used in combination with the drugs for removing heat
from the blood and detoxicating, such as rhinoceros horn,
rehmannia root and coptis root, known as Qingying Tang
(Decoction for Clearing Heat in the Ying Division) and
Huaban Tang (Decoction for Relieving Feverish Rash).
2.
For scrofula and suppurative infections on body
surface, it is used in combination with the drugs for
softening and resolving hard mass, such as fritillary
bulb, oyster shell, etc. In cases of superficial
suppurative infections, swollen and sore throat, it is
used in combination with the heat-clearing and
detoxicating drugs, such as fousythia fruit, viola herb,
etc.
3.
For the syndromes of deficiency of lung-and
kidney-yin, flaring up of the fire of deficiency type,
cough due to pulmonary tuberculosis, sore throat and night
sweat, it is used in combination with the drugs for
nourishing Yin and purging fire, such as wolfberry bark,
ophiopogon root, anemarrhena rhizome, etc.
Dosage
and Administration: 10-15g.
Precautions:
It is incompatible with hellebore root and contraindicated
in spleen-deficiency.
