Belamcanda
(Blackberrylily) Rhizome (she gan)
Rhizoma Belamcandae
Properties:
Bitter in flavour, cold in
nature, it acts on the lung channel. The bitter
and the cold properties can clear away heat and
detoxicate. It is good at removing the
phlegm-fire in the lung, detoxicating sand
relieving sore throat. So it is indicated for
sore throat caused by upward flaring of
phlegm-fire. It is often used to treat cough and
dyspnea caused by the retention of phlegm and
fluid, by means of its expectorant and lumps
dissolving effects.
Effects:
Clearing away heat, detoxicating, expelling
phlegm and relieving sore throat.
Indication:
1.
For the upward flaring of phlegm-fire and
sore throat, it is used in combination with the
drugs for removing lung-heat, expelling phlegm
and relieving sore throat, such as scutellaria
root, platycodon root, fritillary bulb and
liquorice.
2.
For cough due to phlegm-heat, it is used
in combination with mulberry bark, trichosanthes
fruit, fritillary bulb, the drugs for removing
heat and resolving phlegm. In cases of cough and
dyspnea due to cold-phlegm with thin whitish
sputum, it is used with the drugs for warming
the lung to reduce watery phlegm, such as
pinella tuber, asarum herb (wild ginger), etc.
Dosage and Administration:
6-10g.
