Euryale Seed (qian shi)
Properties:
Sweet,
astringent in flavour, neutral in nature, it is tropistic
to the spleen and kidney channels. Being sweet in flavour,
it can reinforce the spleen and the kidney; and as an
astringent remedy, it has effects of preserving body
essence and arresting diarrhea. This herb is an important
remedy for invigorating the spleen and kidney channels and
functions in strengthening the spleen to relieve diarrhea,
tonifying the kidney to arrest spermatorrhea and
leucorrhagla. It serves to treat protracted diarrhea,
spermatorrhea and leukorrhagia due to deficiency of both
the spleen and the kidney.
Effects:
Astringing intestines to arrest diarrhea, tonifying the
kidney to preserve kidney essence and curing
leukorrhagia.
Indications:
1.
For kidney-deficiency manifested as spontaneous emission
and spermatorrhea, it is used with drugs for reinforcing
the kidney to preserve essence including Os Draconis
Fossilia Ossis Mastodi, Concha Ostreae, Semen Astragali
Complanati, as in Golden Lock Pill for Keeping the Kidney
Essence (Jinsuo Gujing Wan).

For leukorrhagia due to insufficiency of the spleen with
overabundance of dampness, it is used with herbs for
invigorating the spleen to arrest leucorrhagia, such as
Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae, Rhizoma Atractylodis, Rhizoma
Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma Dioscoreae, etc. For
damp-heat leukorrhea, it is used with herbs for
eliminating heat and dampness such as Cortex Phellodendri,
Cortex Ailanthi, Semen Plantaginis, etc.
3.
For deficiency of the spleen with overabundance of
dampness, and protracted diarrhea, it is used with herbs
for invigorating the spleen to eliminate dampness and stop
diarrhea, such as Radix Astragali seu Hedysari, Radix
Codonopsis Pilosulae, Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae,
Rhizoma Dioscoreae, Poria, etc.
Dosage and
Administration: 10-15g.
