Properties:
Bitter and sour in flavour,
neutral in nature, it acts on the liver and kidney
channels. When used raw, it has the effects of dispersing,
promoting the circulation of Qi and lowering the upward
flow of Qi by its bitterness, and promoting blood
circulation to restore menstruation, conducting downward
flow of heat and inducing diuresis to treat strangury. It
is used to treat amenorrhea due to blood stasis,
hematemesis and epistaxis due to blood-heat, strangury due
to heat, and other syrengthening When used prepared, it is
good at tonifying the liver and kidney, strengthening the bones and muscles,
and is used to treat various syndromes caused by
deficiency of liver and kidney.
Effects:
Promoting blood circulation and restoring menstruation,
conducting downward flow of heat, inducing diuresis to
treat strangury, and tonifying the liver and kidney.
Indications:
1. For treatment of irregular
menstruation, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea caused by blood
stasis and postpartum tormina due to accumulation of blood
stasis, it is usually used in combination with Radix
Angelicae sinenis, Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong, Flos
Carthami, Herba Leonuri, and other herbs with the effect
of promoting blood circulation to regulate menstruation.
2. For treatment of advese upward
flow of blood-heat, hematemesis, epistaxis, it can be used
together with Fructus Gardeniae, Radix Scutellariae,
Rhizoma Imperatae, and other herbs with the effects of
cooling blood to stop bleeding; For treatment of the
liver-yang dizziness, headache due to the liver-fire, it
can be used in combination with Concha Haliotidis, Os
Draconis, Radix Gentianae, Ramulus Uncariae Cum Uncis, and
other herbs with the effects of soothing the liver to
lower fire; For treatment of flaring up of the
stomach-fire, toothache and aphthae, it is used together
with Gypsum Fibrosum and Rhizoma Anemarrhenae to clear
away the stomach-fire.
3. For treatment of dysuria due to
dampness-heat and stranguria with blood, stranguria caused
by the passage of urinary stone, it is usually used
together with Herba Lysimachiae, Folium Pyrrosiae, Talcum
and other drugs having the effect of relieving stranguria
and removing urinary stones.
4. For treatment of deficiency of
liver-yin and kidney-yin, aching and weakness in waist and
knees, weakness of muscles, it is used in combination with
the Cortex Eucommiae, Radix Dipsaci, Ramulus Loranthi and
other herbs with the effects of tonifying the liver and kidney, and
strengthening bones and muscles; For treatment of blockage
syndome or rheamatism due to wind-dampness mainly
cold-dampness, it is used together with Rhizoma seu Radix
Notopterygii, Radix Clematidis, and other herbs with the
effects of dispersing cold and relieving pain; For
treatment of blockage syndrome due to damp-heat, it is
used in combination with Cortex Phellodendri, Semen Coicis
and other heat-clearing and dampness-drying drugs.
Dosage and Administration:
6-15g. Chuan Niuxi is used mainly for promoting blood
circulation to lower and disperse damp-heat, while Huai
Niuxi is used for tonifying the liver and kidney.
Precautions:
Contraindicated in pregnancy and
