Eclipta (mo han lian)

Herba Ecliptae

 

Properties: the herb is sweet and sour in flavour, cold in nature and acts on the liver and kidney channels. Being sweet and sour for transforming Yin, cold in nature for clearing heat, acting on the liver and kidney for nourishing Yin and blackening hair, and acting on blood for clearing heat from blood to stop bleeding, the herb is indicated for syndromes caused by Yin deficiency of the liver and kidney, and for many kinds of bleeding due to blood-heat.

Effects: Tonifying the liver and kidney, and clearing heat from blood to stop bleeding.

Indications:

1. To treat dizziness, tinnitus, aching and weakness of the waist and knees, and premature graying of hair caused by Yin deficiency of the liver and kidney, the herb is often used in combination with glossy privet fruit, such as Erzhi Pill.

2. To treat epistaxis, hemoptysis, hematuria, metrorrhagia and matrostaxis, and many other kinds of bleeding due to blood heat, the herb is often used in combination with Japanese thistle, field thistle, cogongrass rhizome, dried rehmannia root, capejasmine fruit and other herbs for clearing heat from blood to stop bleeding.

Dosage and Administration: 10-15g. Appropriate amount for external applications.
