Red Ochre (dai zhe shi)

Ochra Haematitum

Properties: Bitter in flavour, cold in nature, it acts on liver, heart, stomach and lung channels. It has the effects of calming the liver and suppressing hyperactivity of liver-yang in treating those caused by flaring-up of liver-fire and hyperactivity of liver-yang; descending the upward adverse flow of Qi of the lung and stomach to treat asthma and cough and release vomiting; and also has the effects of removing the heat of blood and stopping bleeding to treat adverse flow of blood heat.

Effects: Calming the liver and suppressing hyperactivity of the liver-yang, checking and descending the upward rebellious Qi, removing heat from the blood and stopping bleeding .

Indications:

1. For dizziness and headache, restlessness, insomnia and dreaminess due to hyperacitvity of liver-yang, it is often used with magnetite (Magnetitum), dragon¡¯s bone (Os Draconis Fossilia),oyster shell (Concha Ostreae) and white peony root (Radix Paeoniae alba).

2. For vomiting, hiccup and eructation due to deficiency of stomach and spleen, failure of descending of stomach-qi or adverse rising of stomach-qi, it is used together with inula flower (Flos Inulae), ginger (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), pinellia tuber (Rhizoma Pinelliae), dangshen (Radix Codonopsis pilosulae) to regulate the middle-jiao and keep and adverse Qi downward, nourish Qi and spleen; for dyspnea and chronic cough due to deficiency of Qi of lung and kidney , it is used in combination with ginseng (Radix Ginseng), Chinese yam (Rhizoma Dioscoreae) and fruit of medicinal cornel (Fructus Corni) as in Decoction of Dangshen and Red Ocher for Suppressing Reversed Flow of Qi.

3. For hematemesis, epistaxis due to exulerance of blood heat, it is used with achyranthes and cyathula root (Radix Achyranthis bidentatae et Radix Cyathulae), capejasmine fruit (Fructus Gardeniae), scutellaria root (Radix Scutellariae) and curcuma root (Radix Curumae).

Dosage and Administration: 15-30g. Decocted earlier than other drugs, 3g powder each time.
