Chuanxiong Rhizome (chuan xiong)

Rhizoma of the perennial Ligustici Chuanxiong

 

Properities: It is pungent in flavour, warm in nature, acting on liver channel, gallbladder channel and pericardium channels. Its pungent flavour is good for dispersing blood stasis and the warm property for freeing the passage of blood. Its wandering function exerts its effects both on the blood division and the qi division, hence, it is a herb for vital energy in blood with the actions of promoting blood circulation and flow of Qi and relieving pain. It is the herb usually used to treat thoracalgia and abdominal pain caused by Qi and blood stasis, traumatic ecchymoma, swelling and pain due to suppurative infection or carbuncle, and other disease. It is also good at dispelling wind and relieving pain, so it is used to treat various kinds of headache and numbness and pain due to wind-dampness.

Effects: Promoting blood circulation and flow of Qi, dispelling wind and relieving pain.

Indication:

1. For the treatment of irregular menstruation due to stagnation of Qi and blood, dymenorrhea, amenorrhea, postpartum tormina, it is usually used in combination with Radix Andelicae Sinensis, Radix Paeoniae, Radix Bupleuri, Rhizoma Cyperi, and other herbs with functions of promoting the circulation of Qi and blood, regulating menstruation and relieving pain.

2. For the treatment of stagnation of Qi and blood in the Liver channel, chest and abdominal pain, or blockage of the Heart channel, it is usually used in combination with Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Flos Carthami, Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae, Rhizoma Cyperi, Rhizoma Corydalis, and other herbs with the actions of promoting the circulation of Qi and blood and relieving pain.

3. For the treatment of headache due to the wind-cold, it can be used together herbs with Radix Andelicae Dahuricae, Radix Ledebouriellae, Herba Asari, and other herbs having the action of dispersing cold and relieving pain; For the treatment of headache due to the wind-heat,, it is usually used in combination with Flos Chrysanthemi, Bombyx Batryticatus, Cypsum Fibrosum, Radix Ledebouiellae, and other herbs having functions of dispelling wind and clearing away heat; For treatment of headache due to deficiency of blood, Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Radix Paeoniae, Caulis Spatholobi, and other herbs with the action of nourishing the blood and relieving pain can be used together with it.
