Japanese Beauty-Berry (zi zhu)

Folium Callivarpae Nudiflorae

Properties: The herb is bitter and puckery in flavour, cool in nature, and acts on the liver, lung and stomach channels. Being puckery for astringency, cool for clearing heat, and acting on blood for stopping bleeding by astringency and by clearing heat from blood, the herb is indicated for many kinds of bleeding and particularly good for bleeding in the lung and stomach. In addition, bitter and cool for clearing heat and toxins, the herb can be used to treat skin and external diseases as well as pyogenic infections.

Effects: Stopping bleeding by astringencyd, clearing heat and toxins.

Indications:

1. The treat bleeding in the lung and stomach, the herb can be decocted alone or ground into powder for oral medication. At present, its tablet or injection preparations have been produced for use. To treat hematuria, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis and other kinds of bleeding due to blood-heat, the herb can be used in combination with field thistle, dried rehmannia root, eclipta and other herbs for clearing heat from blood to stop bleeding. To treat traumatic bleeding, the fresh herb can be mashed for external application.

2. To treat skin and external diseases due to toxic heat, the herb can be orally taken, externally applied, or used in combination with other herbs for clearing heat and toxins.

Dosage and Administration: 10-15g. 1.5-3g of powder for oral taken, an appropriate amount for external application.
