Macrostem Onion (xie bai)

Bulbus Allii Macrostemi

Properties: The herb is pungent and bitter in flavour, and warm in nature. It acts on the lung, stomach and large intestine channels. Being pungent for dispersing, bitter for purging and warm for clearing and lubricating, the herb can activate Yang and promote Qi circulation in the chest to disperse cold accumulation, and promote Qi circulation in the large intestine to remove damp stagnation. It is indicated for colic due to obstruction of Qi in the chest caused by insufficiency of the chest-Yang and for diarrhea, dysentery and tenesmus due o damp stagnation in the large intestine.

Effects: Activating Yang, dispersing lump, promoting Qi circulation and removing stagnancy.

Indications:

1. To treat colic due to obstruction of Qi in the chest caused by insufficiency of the chest-Yang and obstruction by cold, the herb is often used in combination with trichosanthes fruit, cinnamom twig and other herbs for activating Yang, dispersing cold, relieving oppressive chest and promoting circulation of Qi, such as Gualou Xiebai Guizhi Decoction.

2. To treat excessive dampness and Qi stagnation in the large intestine, abdominal pain due to dysentery and tenesmus, it can be used in combination with phellodendron bark, coptis root , aucklandia root and other herbs for clearing heat and dampness, promoting Qi circulation and alleviating pain.

Dosage and Administration: 5-10g.
