Mulberry Bark (sang bai pi)

Cortex Mori Radicis

¡¡

Properties: It is sweet in flavour and cold in nature. It is tropistic to the lung channel. Its sweetness and coldness are good at clearing and sending down rebellious Qi. It acts solely in the lung channel. It can purge lung-heat, send down adverse lung-qi, relieve cough and asthma, thus it is indicated in accumulation of lung-fire, cough and asthma by rebellious Qi. It is able to purge lung-heat, send down adverse Qi, and to promote diuresis, eliminate edema to cure patients with edema and dysuria.

Effects: Purging lung-heat to relieve asthma, diuresis to eliminate edema.

Indications:

1. For treatment of cough with abundant expectoration, chest congestion and shortness of breath due to accumulation of lung-fire, abnormal rising of the lung-qi, it is commonly used together with Cortex Lycii Radicis, Radix Glycyrrhizae, polished round-grained nonglutinous rice for purging heat, sending down abnormally ascending Qi, relieving cough and asthma, such as Xie Bai San.

2. For treatment of retention of dampness due to insufficiency of the spleen, facial edema, dysuria, asthma due to reversed flow of Qi, it is usually used together with Pericarpium Arecae. Pericarpium Citrl Reticulatae, Poria peel, and other diuretics and edema-eliminating herbs, such as Wupi Yin.

Dosage and Administration: 10-15g.
