Properties:
It is pungent and bitter in flavour, warm in nature, acts
on the heart, liver and spleen channels. Being pungent for
dispersing, bitter for purging, warm for promoting
circulation of Qi and aromatic for moving, it chiefly
effects on the blood division of heart and liver,
promoting blood circulation, and relieving pain by
removing blood stasis. It can be used to treat pain in
chest and abdomen due to stasis in the blood division,
dysmenorrhea, and arthralgia due to wind-dampness, pain
due to tramatic ecchymoses, and other syndromes. It also
has the action of relieving swelling and promoting tissue
regeneration, hence it is the essential drug for
superficial suppurative infections and carbuncls.
Effects:
Promoting blood circulation and relieving pain, subsiding
swelling and promoting tissue regeneration.
Indications:
1. For treatment of pain in the chest
and abdomen due to stasis in the blood division and
dysmenothea, it is usually used in combination with
Rhizoma Corydalis, Faeces Trogopterorum, Radix Angelicae
Sinensis, Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong, Rhizoma Cyperi,
and other drugs having the effects of promoting blood
circulation and relieve blood stasis; For treatment of
arthralgia due to wind-dampness, spasm of muscles, it is
commonly used together with Myrrha, Lumbricus, Radix
Aconiti Kusnezoffii, and other herbs with the functions of
expelling wind and clearing away cold, clearing
obstruction in the channels to relieve pain, such as Xiao
Huo Luo Dan.
2. For treatment of skin pore and
carbuncle in the early stage without suppuration, it is
usually used together with flos Lonicerae, Radix
Glycyrrhizae, Spina Gleditsiae, Radix Angelicae Sinensis,
and other herbs having the functions of clearing away heat
and toxins, subsiding swelling by promoting blood
circulation. If the boil has ruptured and does not heal
for a long time due to deficiency of both Qi and blood,
this remedy can be used together with Myrrha, which are
ground into fine powder for external application to
promote tissue regeneration and heal wound. At the same
time, herbs having the effects of invigorating Qi and
nourishing blood should be administered orally for the
purpose of promoting pus discharge and tissue
regeneration; For treatment of trauma, swelling and pain
due to blood stasis, it is usually used in combination
with Myrrha, Flos Carthami, Moschus, and other herbs with
the effects of promoting blood circulation by relieving
blood stasis, subsiding swelling and relieving pain, such
as Qili San.
Dosage and Administration: 3-10g.
For external application, suitable amount is used.
Precautions:
Contraindicated in pregnancy.
