Peucedanum Root (qian hu)   

Radix Peucedani

¡¡

properties: It is bitter and acrid in flavour and slightly cold in nature. It is tropistic to the lung channel. Its bitterness has the action of sending down abnormally ascending Qi, resolving cough to stop cough; its acridness is dispersing; and slight coldness can clear heat. Hence, it can both sending down the adverse Qi, resolving phlegm to stop cough, and dispersing wind-heat. It is thus indicated in cough due to phlegm-heat, and those with cough and sore-throat caused by invasion of lung by wind-heat.

Effects: Sending down abnormally ascending Qi to resolve phlegm, expelling wind-heat.

Indications:

1. For treatment of cough due to phlegm-heat, yellow sputum and chest tightness, it can be used in combination with Cortex Mori Radicis, Bulbus Fritillariae, Semen Armeniacae Amarum, and other drugs having the effects of relieving cough and asthma, removing heat-phlegm, such as Qianhu San.

2. For treatment of invasion of lung by wind-heat, cough and sore-throat, it is usually used together with Fructus Arctii, Folium Mori, Herba Menthae, Radix Platycodi, and other drugs to dispel wind-heat, stop cough, and soothing sore-throat.

Dosage and Administration: 3-10g.
