Radish Seed (lai fu zi)

Properties: The herb is pungent and sweet in flavour, and neutral in nature. It acts on the spleen, stomach and lung channels. Being pungent for dispersion, the herb is good at regulation Qi in the spleen and lung, removing food retention, relieving distention, lowering the adverse flow of Qi, excessive phlegm, severe asthma and other syndromes.

Effects: Removing food retention, relieving distention, lowering the adverse flow of Qi and resolving phlegm.

Indications:

1. The herb can be used in combination with hawthorn fruit, medicated leaven, germinated barley, pinellia tuber and other herbs for relieving food stagnation, normalizing stomach function and arresting vomiting, to treat indigestion, Qi stagnation, abdominal distention, acid regurgitation, vomiting and nausea; and with rhubarb, immature bitter orange, peach kernel and other herbs for relievign Qi stagnation and fullness, purging heat and relaxing the bowels, to treat accumulation of heat in the stomach and intestine, stagnation of Qi, abdominal distention, fever and constipation.

2. To treat excessive phlegm-dampness, obstruction of Qi by phlegm abundant expectoration, oppressive sensation in the chest, asthma and cough, the herb is often used in combination with white mustard seed and perilla fruit for lowering Qi, resolving phlegm, relieving cough and asthma, such as Sanzi Yangqin Decoction.

Dosage and Administration: 6-10g.
