Galangal Rhizome (gao liang jiang)

Rhizoma Galangae

 

Properties: The herb is pungent in flavour, and hot in nature. It acts on the spleen and stomach channels. Being pungent and hot for dispersing cold and mainly acting on the middle-jiao to warm it , dispersing interior cold of excess type, alleviating pain and arresting vomiting, the herb is indicated for Qi stasis due to cold, stomachache and vomiting.

Effects: Warming the middle-jiao and alleviating pain.

Indications:

The herb is often used in combination with nutgrass flatsedge rhizome for warming the middle-jiao, dispersing cold, promoting the circulation of Qi and alleviating pain, to treat Qi stasis due to cold, gastric distention and pain; with dangshen, dried ginger, white atractylodes rhizome and other herbs for supplementing Qi, strengthening the spleen, warming the middle-jiao and dispersing cold, to treat cold of insufficiency type in the middle-jiao, cold and pain in the stomach and abdomen, anorexia and loose stool; and with pinellia tuber, fresh ginger and other herbs for normalizing stomach function and arresting vomiting, to treat vomiting due to cold in the stomach.

Dosage and Administration: 3-10g.
