Magnet (chi shi)

Magnetitum

Properties: Salty in flavour, cold in nature, it acts on the heart, liver and kidney channels. It is salty in flavour, cold in nature and heavy in quality, with action of lowering. It acts on heart channel, can lower heart-fire and tranquilize the mind. Acting on liver channel, it can supplement liver-yin and suppress liver-yang. Acting on kidney channel. It can help kidney to store essence. It benefits lung to control the lung-qi, and to improve auditory, visual and vestibular function. It is often used for treatment of restlessness, insomnia, and dizziness due to overabundance of Yang and for insufficiency of liver and kidney manifested as blurring of vision, tinnitus, dyspnea.

Effects: Suppressing the sthenic Yang, tranquilizing the mind, improving inspiration by invigorating kidney-energy and relieving dyspnea, improving visual, auditory and vestibular function.

Indications:

1. Vertigo and headache due to deficiency of Yin of liver and kidney or hyperactivity of Yang liver. It is often used with Os Draconis, Concha Holiotidis, Radix Paeoniae, Flos Chrysanthemi, Radix Achyranthis Bidfntatae to calm the liver and suppress the sthenic Yang. In cases of tinnitus due to deficiency of kidney, and deafness and blurring of vision due to insufficiency of Yin of liver and kidney, it should be used with drugs of tonifying liver and kidney, such as Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata, Fructus Corni , Frutus Schsandrae Rhizoma Dioscoreae, Semen Cuscutae.

2. Restlessness and insomnia due to deficiency of Yin and hyperactivity of Yang, it is used together with Cinnabaris of strengthen the tranquilizing effect, as in ¡<Pill of Magnetite and Cinnabar¡\.

3. For chronic cough and asthma of insufficiency type, weak inspiration caused by the deficiency of kidney qi, it is used together with herbs of tonifying kidney, such as Semen Juglandis, Fructus Schisandre, Fructus Psoraleae, Rhiozoma Dioscoreae, etc.

Dosage and Administration: 0.3-1.0g, crashed into granules and then decocted or prepared as pill or powder for oral use.
