                                                             Giant Typhonium Tuber (bai fu zi)

Rhizoma Typhonii

Properties: It is acrid sweet in flavour, warm in nature, and toxic. It acts on the liver, stomach channels. Its acridness has functions of dispelling wind, warmness and resolving phlegm. It is chiefly acts in the liver channel, so is good for removing wind-phlegm to stop spasm. Its property is ascending and dispersing and is particularly good for removing wind-phlegm in head and face and pathogens of cold and dampness. Thus, it is used in treatment of stroke, facial paralysis, headache, migraine, and other syndromes. It can be used freshly for resolving toxic swelling scrofula and furuncle.

Effects: Expelling dampness to reduce phlegm, and wind to relieve spasm, detoxicating and resolving mass.

Indications:

1. For treatment of blockage in channels by wind-phlegm, facial hemiparalysis, it is usually used together with Bombyx Batryticatus, Scorpio to dispel wind, resolve phlegm, and obstruction in the channels, such as Qianzheng San; For treatment of stroke with abundant phlegm, aphasia, hemiplegia, it can be used in combination with Rhizoma Arisaematis, Rhizoma Pinelliae, Scorpio, and other drugs of resolving phlegm and dispelling wind, such as Baifu Yin; For treatment of tetanus, it is usually used in combination with Radix Ledebouriellae, Radix Angelicae Dahuricae, Rhizoma Gastrodiae, and other drugs in order to dispel wind and arrest spasm.

2. For treatment of headache and maigraine due to adversely upward attack by cold-dampness, it can be used together with Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong, Radix Ledebouriellae, Radix Angelicae Dahuricae, and other drugs with the effects of relieving pain, dispelling wind coldness and dampness.

3. For treatment of scrofula and furuncle, fresh herb alone can be used externally after pounding; For treatment of snakebite, it can be used together with Rhizoma Arisaematis in water or alcohol suspension for external application.

Dosage and Administration: 3-6g. Suitable amount for external application.

Precautions: Contraindicated in pregnancy. It is used freshly only for external appliction.
