Properties:
It is sweet, bitter in flavour and slightly warm in
nature. It is tropistic to the lung channel. Its sweetness
enables moistening and bitterness can send down abnormally
asceding Qi. Therefore, it is effective in moistening the
lung and sending down rebellious Qi, relieving cough and
asthma. Its slight warmness can fit to acute or chronic
cough and asthma, cold or heat, deficiency or excess in
compound prescriptions. It can also be applied externally
to eliminate worms and insects and relieve itching, as in
oxyuriasis and phthiriasis.
Effects:
Moistening the lung and relieving cough, killing worms and
insects, including louse.
Indications:
1. For treatment of cough due to
exopathogen, it is usually used in combination with Herba
Schizonepetae, Radix Platycodi, Radix Asteris, Radix
Glycyrrhizae, and other herbs to disperse wind in the
lung, relieve cough and phlegm, such as Zhisou San; For
treatment of cough due to lung-heat, it is usually used
together with Gypsum Fibrosum, Bulbus Fritillariae, Radix
Scutellariae, and other drugs having the effect of
removing heat from the lung to relieve cough; For
treatment of persistent cough due to deficiency of
lung-yin, it can be used in combination with Radix
Adenophorae, Rhizoma Polygonati Odorati, Radix
Ophiopogonis, and other herbs with the effect of
nourishing Yin to moisten the lung. When it is used alone,
a 20% syrup preparation is used for pertussis.
2. For treatment of oxyuriasis,
30-50g of it can be used to make a concentrate decoction
of 30ml for retention-enema every night for 10 successive
nights; For treatment of pediculosis capitis, pediculosis
corporis, it can be used to make a 20% alcoholic extract
or 50% water extract for external application.
Besides, it is also used in
combination with Fructus Cnidii, Radix Sophorae
Flavescentis, Fructus Rochiae, Pericarpium Zanthoxyli, and
other herbs to make decoction for external washing in
pruritus vulvae.
Dosage and Administration:
5-10g. When it is applied externally, suitable amount is
used.
