Argyi Leaf (ai ye)

  Foilum Artemisiae Argyi

Properties: The herb is bitter and pungent in flavour, warm in nature, and acts on the liver, spleen and kidney channels. Being pungent for dispersion, bitter for dryness, warm for dispersing cold, and acting on blood for warming the channels and dispersing cold to stop bleeding, the herb is indicated for bleeding due to cold of insufficiency type caused by deficiency of Qi, Yang and blood. Acting on the abdominal channels and collaterals for expelling wind, dispersing cold, warming the channels and alleviating pain, the herb is used to treat abdominal pain due to cold of insufficiency type, women's dysmenorrhea and arthralgia due to wind-coldness and other syndromes.        

Effects: Warming the channels to stop bleeding, and dispersing cold alleviate pain.

Indications:

1. The herb is often used in combination with donkey-hide gelatin, Chinese angelica root, dried rehmannia root, white peony root and other herbs for warming the channels to stop bleeding and nourishing blood to prevent miscarriage, to treat metrorrhagia and metrostaxis or vaginal bleeding during pregnancy caused by cold of insufficiency type in the lower jiao and debility of Chong and Ren Channels; and with lotus leaf, dried rehmannia root and biota tops for clearing heat from blood to stop bleeding, to treat haematemesis and epistaxis caused by bleeding due to blood-heat.

2. The herb is often used in combination with cinnamon bark, cyperus tuber, Chinese angelica root and other herbs for warming the channels, dispersing cold, nourishing blood and regulating menstruation, such as Anfu Nuangong Pill, to treat cold of insufficiency type in the lower jiao of women, cold of pain in the lower abdomen, irregular menstruation and sterility; and with dried ginger, amomum fruit, corydalis tuber and other herbs of warming the middle-jiao, disposing cold and alleviating pain, to treat cold of insufficiency type in the middle jiao, cold pain in the stomach and abdomen.

In addition, the herb made into moxa-cigars for moxibustion on acupoints can treat cold pain due to cold-dampness. Its decoction for external washing can treat itching of eczema.

Dosage and Administration: 3-10g. Decocted for oral medication, and stirbaked charred for stopping bleeding.
